Gift Idea?
I had an interesting discussion with my adult son yesterday over our holiday gift wish list. His idea was that each person in the family find an item they already owned that has special meaning to them. Then wrap that item so each of us has gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning. As the gift is unwrapped, the giver would then share what meaning this gift has for them and why it is so special. The receiver would then return the item to the giver with appreciation for sharing something personal.
I love this idea. There is much ado about the commercialism of the Christmas season. I have even heard there is sometimes competition among family members or co-workers on who got the best gift or spent the most money.
I sometimes wonder in our technological age if the most gracious gift we can give each other is our presence. Being with someone, listening to them share a part of themselves; their stories. There was a Facebook challenge going around a while ago inspiring people when they go out to a restaurant together to all put their cell phones in a pile. The first one to reach for their cell phone has to pay the bill.
I challenge each of you this holiday season to put down that joy stick and go ask grandma what were her greatest lessons in life; ask grandpa his greatest financial risks; what were your mom and/or dad’s greatest fear while raising you?
The gift of warm communication, both giving and receiving, is one thing that can help make our hearts harmonious this holiday season.
